GARY BASEMAN CHARITY EBAY AUCTION

When art and awareness collide, the result is nothing short of astounding. Three hours with Gary Baseman, TV producer, toy designer – artist – proved just that.  As onlookers gazed, armed with little more than a black marker and the vast depths of an at-once haunting and youthful imagination, Baseman graced an empty space with the vivid images of his mind’s eye.  A member of the Los Angeles Underground Art Movement, his art was an act of charity sponsored by the generosity of the Club Martini and Bar Shisha in Chiang Mai.  The club hosted the event, a three-hour live graffiti drawing, that resulted in the production of yet another of Baseman’s inspiring and eclectic masterpieces.

All proceeds will go to Cultural Canvas Thailand, a Chiang Mai-based organization that uses visual arts, dance, music and drama to give a voice to struggling and marginalized social groups in the local community. The organization works with a wide ranging of people, including Burmese refugees, indigenous hill tribe groups, orphans, single mothers and children with disabilities. The money will go to fund art projects and exhibitions with organizations such as Baan Piranan, a local home for Thai children with cerebral palsy.  For many of these children, unable to communicate in traditional fashion, art and painting in particular acts as a vehicle for not only self-expression, but external communication with those around them.  What’s more, through art, these children are able to develop enhanced motor skills, dexterity, and strengthen their visual and mental concentration.

Efforts like those of Club Martini and Bar Shisha and Baseman continue to be widely applauded for raising awareness of otherwise shrouded issues.

Funds go to: Canvas Art Program (CAP), a project of Cultural Canvas Thailand, in which artistic, musical, and dramatic workshops are designed and implemented various struggling social groups in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The money will go to purchase supplies, including paint, paper, pastels, clay, musical instruments, cameras, and film. The goal is to promote the arts while utilizing the arts as a tool to raise awareness of pressing social issues. One of the specific focus groups of CAP is children with disabilities. We work weekly with kids with disabilities, specifically cerebral palsy, blindness, and fetal alcohol syndrome, through various artistic mediums. Later this year, we will put on a large exhibition/event to show the children’s work and raise awareness about disability and the social stigmas associated with it.
